Easy to use, small and discreet
Pen vaporizers (or “vape pens”) are essentially small vaporizers shaped like a pen. You can get pen vaporizers for herbs, waxes, or some models have the compatibility for both herbs and waxes. Pen vaporizers that are compatible with one material typically are the better option. They are typically discrete, easy to use, and much cheaper than more robust portable vaporizers or desktop vaporizers.
Herbal vape pens almost always utilize conduction heating (as opposed to the preferred convection heating method). Pen-style units utilize a heating method called conduction by transferring heat directly from the heating coil to your herbs. As a result of making direct contact with the heat source, combustion occurs and smoke is produced.

Handheld for on the go
Portable vaporizers easily fit in the palm of a hand. Unlike pens, handhelds are typically a bit larger than pens and can be found in a multitude of shapes and designs. If you want to vape in many different locations or travel a lot, perhaps a portable vaporizer is for you. Slightly larger than a pen vape, a portable vaporizer is any vape that can be taken on the go. Convenience is key with these vaporizers and they can easily pack up and go with you wherever you are. The majority of portable vapes are rechargeable but there are also butane and flame options.

Perfect for at home
Desktop vaporizers are generally “stay at home” vaporizers that typically need to be plugged in. Although these vaporizers aren’t portable, desktops generally deliver much higher quality vapor through a convection heating source and offer many more features. For instance, you can typically only get balloon attachments for desktop vaporizers. Also, desktops sometimes allow for group vape sessions as opposed to solo-vape sessions. They typically come equipped with larger bowls and more robust heating systems that make vaporizing a relaxing and fulfilling experience.
